The Art Pavilion currently has two concurrent exhibitions: Unity and Community and Para (পাড়া) which continue until Sunday 25th in the afternoon.
This year’s PhotoMonth Open Call Exhibition, Unity and Community, brings together photographs by 21 artists from all around the world, and is a response to drastic regression toward division and discrimination seen in cities all across the globe and, significantly, London. Photograph Arts believes that London’s greatest strengths as a cultural and artistic hub is the creation and preservation of community by all people that find a home here. Given that PhotoMonth was founded on the belief that photography is for all, we aim to uphold these values and represent diverse communities and perspectives, reflecting the divergent cultures, practices, and people that make up the city.
This exhibition is produced by Photograph Arts and curated by Ishy Pryce-Parchment, Tom Hunter, Cherelle Sappleton, and Leah Mclaine.
Participating artists:
Alex Robertson • Corinne Quinn • David Boulogne • Heun Jung Kim • Igor Zelenov • Iyesogie Ogieriakhi • Jeremy Skirrow • John Hartley • Julio Etchart • Kevin You • Lia Cordery • Mamu Unu • Megan Taylor • Nahwand Jaff • Neil Martinson • Ravi Madan • Tarlan Lotfizadeh • Tianqiutao Chen
Para (পাড়া)
Seamus Murphy, photographs from Kolkata, Curated by Zelda Cheatle.
In Bengali, the word para (পাড়া) means a neighbourhood, locality, or community. But in Bengali culture, a para is more than just a place. It is a tight-knit social circle where neighbours share deep bonds, local festivals, afternoon gossip (adda), and community events.
“In a city that’s constantly coming apart, breaking away, and remaking itself, Seamus Murphy’s camera uncovers a calm, deeply moving formalism. But he is also pointing to the generation of unexpected patterns and visual harmonies in a city that has in many ways lost touch with that history. It’s as if Calcutta, unaware of itself as anything but terrain and habitation, continues to create, inadvertently, new fields of line, movement, and colour.” Amit Chaudhuri
